This piece is typical of a certain type of piece in women’s magazines: the first-person science story. In a companionable and accessible voice, Skloot links complicated science to her own life and thus provides useful information about a question that many readers relate to. In the end we’re not sure the piece quite qualifies as journalism; it’s more like advice (which is of course what women’s magazines specialize in). But the general approach—of using an affable voice to explain complex topics—is instructive.
